Oxford Street is the most famous shopping street in Britain. In Medieval times it was a muddy track leading to the gallows, but now it is now the busiest retail street in Europe, with 200 million visitors every year. 

 

In this programme, we’ll discover how Oxford Street  is the birthplace of the modern retail experience. It pioneered the notion of shopping for pleasure in the early 20th century, and brought fast fashion to the masses in the 1960’s. Today, as online retail threatens its survival, Oxford Street must reinvent itself once again.
